Logitech says Google hasn't asked it to halt Google TV production!

It was a bit too late to fend off a more than 3% drop in its stock price, but Logitech has finally come out and refuted those rumors that it was asked to halt production of its Google TV hardware until a significant update could be rolled out.

As VP of corporate communications Nancy Morrison explains, Logitech "has not been asked by Google to suspend production of its Google TV products," and that such a suspension wouldn't even be necessary as "every Logitech Revue companion box will receive free over-the-air updates whenever Google and Logitech release software enhancements." That statement has now also been backed up by Logitech's official blog, which assures customers that "all's well with Logitech Revue," and that Logitech will be out in force at CES next month to demonstrate "how Google TV is transforming the TV-watching experience."

Data Crunchers offer the word on Facebook

P eople use status updates to share what’s on their minds, to tell others what they’re doing, and to gather feedback from friends. The different ways people use status updates form some interesting patterns. In this study, we looked at the usage of words in different “word categories” in status updates. This led us to discover some patterns in how people use status updates differently, and how their friends interact with different status updates.

If you took the countless number of Facebook "status updates," or out-loud thoughts, that are plastered on the site every day and put them under a microscope, what patterns would emerge from these many billions of words? What glimpse might we get into the hearts and minds of the social network's millions of users?

Facebook's data-crunching team decided to take a look this week, and it gleaned some insight into the different ways in which older and younger, many-friends and more-intimate members express themselves.

The team collected about 1 million status updates generated by U.S. English speakers, anonymized them, and picked them apart word-by-word with the help of a text-analysis application called Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count. LIWC was originally developed, with the help of the National Institutes of Health, to aid the study of how written and verbal language reflects mental and physical well-being.

The Facebook team used the LIWC dictionary and its many word groupings to dissect the status posts. The dictionary, for example, has a "psychological processes" category, with an "affective processes" subcategory and a "positive emotion" sub--which includes words such as love, nice, and sweet. There's also a "swear words" subcategory--under the larger "linguistic processes" heading--that includes words I won't repeat here.

The resulting data-dumps provide ample opportunity for musing about the Facebook phenomenon. The data group looked, for instance, at status updates that had triggered comments from readers or inspired them to hit the "Like" button, and it noted the word types most often used in such updates. The team, however, also found that members with a lot of friends tend to use different types of words than members with fewer friends.

At any rate, whether Smith is right or wrong--or whether my own little musing makes any sense--the Facebook Data Team's results are fun to look at and use as fuel for your own ideas about Zuckerberg's monster (and people in general). I'm appending them here, and inviting you to offer up your own heady theories--serious or not--in the comments section.

(A list of LIWC word groupings can be found here. The Facebook Data Team noted other interesting tidbits as well--negative emotional updates receive more comments than do positive emotional updates, for instance. The team's full post can be found Source.)

Gooogle says we don't need a Hard Drive :!

Google vision of the future of computers with a walk-through of Chrome, Google's new operating system that will launch to the public on Samsung and Asus netbooks in 2011.
Actually, Chrome does not store files, applications and other data on a computer's hard drive, but on online servers, which could eliminate the need for a hard drive. And without a hard drive, computers themselves could become more affordable. We've seen a $300 netbook, could a $300 full-sized laptop be next?.

The developers of Chrome designed the system for people who spend the majority of their computer time online. If you connect to e-mail, you're online. If you're researching, you're online.

As a matter of fact, tasks that could only be done on your computer, such as editing photos and video, can be done online by accessing services like YouTube Remixer, MovieMasher and PhotoBucket.

In 2007, Google introduced another application called Street View which provides panoramic views from various positions along many streets in the world. Hot News About Wikipedia going to Setup Shop in India within 6months !

Great news about this Wikipedia going to setting up shop in India. "Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, talked about his hopes for Wikipedia especially on the number of articles in Indian languages". India is one of the few countries with Wikipedia usage less than 15% ,which is much lower compared to other parts of the world. There are millions of people online in India but English is not their primary language. There is going to be several hundreds of people in 10 years from now who cannot read or write English but if we start contributing to the content today on local languages, we are looking at a very large audience in 5 years from now.

The big reason that Wikipedia is opening here is that the country is at a level of  'middle enthusiasm'. What this means is the number of Wikipedia pages in Indian languages isn't very high but isn't so low that hope is barely floating. Basically, Indian Wikipedia pages have a lot of potential to grow but need help to capitalize on that potential.
Wikipedia's goals for India till 2015 include:
  • Top 10 Indian languages have mature wikipedia pages (which means having more than 100 thousand substantial pages) and Wiktionary available enabling potential reach to 80% of the Indian population
  • 100 million unique visitors monthly to Wikimedia projects
  • More than 75% of schools in India have access to Wikipedia and Wiktionary either via the internet or offline (via CD-ROM etc).
So, According to this might be useful and welcoming great Wikipedia .

How To Test Your HardDisk Health

Some Tips to Make Your System,Laptop Hard-disk Healthier:

Hard disk Failure is possibly the worst thing that can happen to your computer and it often occurs without giving any warning ,error, and even making sounds.

Test Your Hard Drive for Critical Problems:

You may however run certain tests on your computer beforehand to get an idea about the current condition of your hard disk. This should in turn help you decide whether a replacement drive is necessary or not.

  • Finding Errors in Hard-drives:
All recent versions of Windows include a utility called Chkdsk.exe that can check your hard disk for any bad sectors.

Harddisk
You may  run Chkdsk.exe  from the command line or launch Windows Explorer, right click the drive that you wish to examine and choose Properties.

Switch to the Tools tab and click the “Check Now” button under Error checking. Select “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors” to perform a thorough disk check.

:- Understand the sounds of your disk:                You might be  hear some sort of sounds coming out of the CPU box? Well, if the hard drive is making those sounds, it could be an alarming situation and your best bet would be that you turn off the computer before any further damage is done to the disk. If your disk is making a similar sound, get a replacement quickly.

  • Catch errors before they happen

Disk Checkup  is a free hard disk monitoring utility that displays tons of diagnostic data about your disk. While the level of detail it provides may easily confuse even tech-savvy users, just ignore the numbers and keep the utility running in the background.

It monitors your disk’s temperature, read and write error rate, etc. and will alert you when the values of any of these parameters approach dangerous levels. These may be signs of an impending disk failure. Disk Checkup is free for personal use.
  •  Test your Hard Disk

SeaTools is free diagnostic tool that can completely test your hard drive regardless of the OS installed on it. The tool is provided by Seagate but it works with non-Seagate  disk drives as well.

you need to download the ISO image of SeaTools for DOS and create a bootable CD. Now boot the computer with the CD in the drive, accept the license agreement and run a long test (the full scan). If any defects are found, a list will be offered at the end or after aborting the disk scan.

Other computer vendors /disk manufactures including Dell, Samsung, Hitachi,  etc.  too offer diagnostic tools that work only with their own brand of hard disk. If you are having frequent computer problems (like system hangs or fails to boot up), you may run these tools to confirm if the problems are hard drive related.

*NOTE:  These tools can help you diagnose your hard drive’s health. There is no substitute for backups

FaceBook is now a $33 Billion Entity

Face book has soiled all its competitors by grabbing the top slot. The young CEO of Face book Mark Zuckerberg has another reason to celebrate. Face book is now a $33 billion entity. Yahoo and e-bay are kept at bay when it comes to stock market worth.

Yahoo values 30.1 billion dollars and e-bay values 18.3 billion dollars respectively.
Facebook stands as a concrete wall for all its competitors. Even technology biggies have been put to shame by this social networking site with 76 dollars per share rate. The Financial Times gauged the market value of Facebook confirming the membership of 500million users on it. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Zynga, are delaying their IPOs because of perceived weak appetite on the public markets.

Facebook is currently financed through a mixture of investment firms and venture capital companies. Analysts have also said that there is a possibility that Facebook would float by 2011.

Google Voice Calling in Gmail

Google is testing a Web-based service within Gmail that will allow users to place phone calls from their in-boxes.
It's launched from the Google Chat window on the lower left-hand side of a Gmail page and allows users to place and receive calls from within their contacts through a user interface that strongly resembles the one used in Google Voice.

Google has been edging in this direction for some time. Google Talk was released years ago as a VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) desktop client, and it has also spent a lot of time and money evangelizing Google Voice, a service that transcribes voice mails and allows users to have one phone number that rings multiple phones.
The user interfaces appear the same--for example, the same icons are used to label missed calls or placed calls--but Google Voice is not a VoIP service. Users of the new chat/phone call service aren't required to have a Google Voice account, and calls placed to U.S. or Canadian numbers will be free, with discounts on international calls as compared to standard rates.

Skype is the obvious target of such an application, but there are lots of companies that make both desktop-based and Web-based VoIP clients.
"Google is always testing new features and products, but we have nothing specific to announce right now," a Google representative said.
